Less than two weeks from its release, Gotham Knights Fans are urged to dodge spoilers online after a seemingly major leak. Some of the game’s official art books appear to have shipped early, and at least one player has started sharing screenshots of the game’s alleged ending on Reddit. At least one developer behind the beat ’em up comic has since reacted on social media in frustration.

“I can’t begin to understand why anyone would spoil a story (whether it’s a game, a movie, a book, whatever) for others”, tweeted Fleur Marty, executive producer of the game at Warner Bros. Games Montreal, October 7. In addition to cooperative multiplayer and Diablo-like skill trees and lootsome recent glimpses for Gotham Knights launched the unraveling of the mystery at the center of its narrative as another major focal point. Now, with the official artbook seemingly released earlier than expected, the leaks are starting to spoil some of those story threads online.

Spoiler warning: We’ll discuss one of the main apparent revelations below. If you don’t want to be spoiled, I don’t know why you clicked on an article on Gotham Knights spoilers. But definitely don’t continue reading beyond this point.

The setup for Gotham Knights is that Batman has been killed in a terrorist explosion, and his surrogate family, including Nightwing, Jason Todd, Robin, and Batgirl, are tasked with trying to regain control of the city, now besieged by the Court of Owls. Bruce Wayne’s death was teased in trailers and discussed early on. Creative Director Patrick Redding even doubled down on this plot point at San Diego Comic Con 2022, tell a fan who asked during a Q&A that yes, Batman really was dead.

But the apparent art book reveals that’s not necessarily the case. Two-page screenshots doing the rounds online reveal that Bruce is actually revived at some point by Talia al Ghul using the Lazarus Pit. Are you shocked? I know I am. The artbook then details an apparent boss fight with Batman where the player must dodge non-stop attacks while using voice prompts to try and bring a crazed caped crusader back to his senses.

What happens next is not entirely clear, and there is already the disagreement of the fans. One interpretation is that Batman once again dies trying to protect his surrogate family from Talia. Another is that it survives, which provides some interesting possibilities in endgame and post-launch updates. It should be noted, however, that Gotham Knights not officially part of the Batman: Arkham universe. This continuity will reappear in 2023 suicide squad. In theory then, WB Montreal can do whatever it wants with Batman in the Gotham Knights chronology.

A major potential spoiler for the game, it’s understandable that the developers are frustrated to see their work taken out of context before the full game is released. As a lifelong Batman fan and someone who’s played all the Arkham trilogy plus WB Montreal Origins of Arkham, it’s not at all surprising that Batman actually appears in the game at some point. WB’s Batman games have a story of hijinks like these, and beloved comic book heroes never stay dead for long. Batman in particular once propelled his consciousness through time and space after being beamed down by Darkseid.

Meanwhile, one of the users who posted the artbook screenshots on the Gotham Knights subreddit has since bombarded his account. The subreddit also banned all additional spoiler posts, requiring users to channel them into a single thread. WB also appears to have managed to get at least some of the big YouTube videos initially discussing the leaks removed. Gotham Knights was originally supposed to launch on October 25, but in an unusual move its release date was actually pushed back a week earlier. Everyone will now have the chance to see what happens to Batman in real life on October 21st.
