Frankie Dettori found himself on the ground in the opening race of Future Champions Day at Newmarket after his mount Liftoff cut heels and sent itself spiraling to the ground.

The juvenile filly, who was competing in the Group 3 Zetland Stakes, was running towards the back of the field when she descended just past the four furlong mark. Horse and rider quickly got up after the fall.

As Dettori was checked by medics, Liftoff galloped across the moorland that surrounds Newmarket Racecourse before being caught not far from the nearby July course.

Dettori, who brushed off her fall and won Group 1 over Chaldean in Dewhurst, said: “I’m fine, the filly has just cut her heels – she runs with her head a bit high. I don’t envy jump jockeys.

The take-off was confirmed to be no worse for the fall by John Gosden, who trains the filly for the Thoroughbred Racing Corporation alongside his son Thady.

But disaster soon strikes as the filly cuts heels with one of her rivals and falls to the ground

Dettori is thrown onto the turf as the rest of the pitch charge and luckily emerges unscathed before winning the Dewhurst over Chaldean

“She’s doing great,” he said. “She cut her heels and fell. She then had a great run and looked over July before returning. She is fine and the jockey rode in the next one so all was well.

A report by Newmarket Stewards confirmed that Dettori said the fall was due to “the filly running and cutting heels with Band Of Steel”.

Ground staff were shown fixing the area where Liftoff and Dettori had fallen, and Race Director and Newmarket Race Director Michael Prosser said: “The filly just cut the heels, Frankie the said right away. You could see there was grass that had appeared from the fall, so we just put it away.

The Zetland was the first leg of a double for trainer Charlie Appleby, jockey William Buick and Godolphin with Flying Honors winning the prize before Silver Knott won the Autumn Stakes.
